X-DIAS in use | PLC Put to the Test
Simply plug functional modules as a whole into preconfigured circuit boards instead of time-consuming and error-prone wiring of individual wires: This is the basic concept behind the new ‘X-Dias’ I/O system, which SIGMATEK officially launched last year at the SPS trade fair as an addition to its proven ‘S-DIAS’ control portfolio. It was developed by the local automation expert at the suggestion of and in partnership with Emco-Test, a long-standing customer, also based in Salzburg. The globally successful manufacturer of high-quality hardness testing machines was looking for a solution that would, on the one hand, keep the packing density of the increasingly complex control system under control despite the continuously growing range of variants and functions and, on the other hand, make the connection technology faster and easier to install, future-proof and yet economical – all while maintaining a high degree of modularity and production volumes in the mid three-digit range. This seemingly impossible balancing act was achieved in the form of the jointly developed I/O innovation ‘X-DIAS’, which is now going into series production in Emco-Test's latest generation of hardness testing machines, the ‘Vision Line’. see technical report: Austromatisierung - issue 5+6/2025

Static Code Analysis: Identifying Errors Early On
With the growing complexity of automation software, code quality assurance is becoming increasingly important. SIGMATEK's LASAL CLASS engineering tool now offers an optional “Static Code Analysis” (SCA) extension for checking control code created in Structured Text. SCA checks the code base for possible runtime errors and undefined behavior, such as uninitialized variables, returning a pointer to a local variable, implicit conversions, etc. – without having to execute the code. A large number of different, simultaneously running test rules analyze a wide variety of aspects of the control code and identify any quality defects, non-compliance with guidelines, or violations of internal coding standards at an early stage. Trivial errors that are often difficult to find can be prevented by using SCA, reducing the workload on the team and increasing productivity and software quality, not only during development but also during maintenance. Users have very flexible configuration options: each of the more than 50 predefined rules for variables, types, functions, and methods can be parameterized individually. The tool can also calculate metrics. Metrics are measures that evaluate various aspects of the code base. Fully configurable naming conventions are also possible. The rules, metrics, or naming conventions can be enabled or disabled – both individually and in groups. Automated basic checks allow reviewers to focus on the correctness of the logic and architecture. The analysis in a separate output window clearly displays error messages, which can be double-clicked to jump to the corresponding location in the code. Configurable, color-coded priority levels for individual errors in the output provide clarity. Error output can be suppressed line by line using code comments.

The flexible system also convinces with fast, toolless module connection and single-cable technology, as well as numerous Safety functions.

Flexible Safety: Seamlessly integrated for more efficiency
The Safety technology is a component of all SIGMATEK's complete automation systems. All Safety modules, such as S-DIAS Safety controllers and I/Os, as well as drives with Safety functions are seamlessly integrated into the entire system. With the LASAL SAFETYDesigner, you have a comfortable and efficient tool for programming and configuring the Safety system. This consistency provides you with an important competitive edge: the engineering of the machines and equipment is simplified considerably. High flexibility: Various topologies and configurations are possible. The modularity of the Safety components and option of a decentralized configuration allow individual Safety requirements to be flexibly implemented. Existing systems can also be easily expanded with Safety functions. Simple engineering: When the Safety technology is seamlessly integrated into the automation solution, as at SIGMATEK, you profit from consistent system architecture. Engineering is simplified - engineering times and costs are reduced considerably. One bus system for standard and safety: The real-time Ethernet bus system VARAN makes it possible to transmit standard and critical Safety data in the same bus system. Labor and cost intensive wiring of Safety components is therewith eliminated. For safety-oriented communication, the Black Channel principle is used, in which the bus serves as a single-channel data exchange medium only and does not have to be included in safety concepts. Safety Hot-Swap: Change machine network during active operation With the Hot-Swap feature, you have even more flexibility when implementing your Safety concept. Machine components with their own S-DIAS Safety CPUs can be flexibly integrated into the system, logged out and logged back into the machine network at a different location – and that during runtime.
